This illustration was created for the Jan/Feb 2022 issue of The New Republic, to accompany an article about a book recently published about the legacy of Smedley Butler. It is a portrait of the subject of the article, who was a decorated Marine but in his later life in the 1930s became an outspoken advocate denouncing the imperialism of the United States and its participation in the military-industrial complex.
