Marcela Bolívar
Blackwater
Medium: Photo-collage and digital painting

The lush landscapes described in McDowell’s text inspired the atmosphere of these images, where nature and the river -catalyzing force-, becomes another character, the omniscient spectator of the story of a family intertwined by mystery and horror.

Each of the images illustrates a chapter in the saga, which in its original edition was each a novella. Thus, this series represents the different chapters in the story starring two female characters at different times in the family history.

Countless photos from my personal archive of images of the Colombian tropics and personal tropical references were taken to achieve some of the images. Scanned textures and traditional painting were also implemented as texture and detail.
