Virtual Saturday Stories Featuring Illustrator Marcos Almada Rivero

Presented monthly, Saturday Stories invites guest illustrators to lead children and their adult companions in a read-aloud workshop related to the wide range of materials and processes that illustrators use to create their picture books.

Meet acclaimed Mexican illustrator Marcos Almada Rivero in his Mexico City art studio! His featured picture book Family is Family written by Melissa Marr, celebrates the many wonderful ways families are unique and chickens are adorable! Marcos will present a behind the scenes about how he became an illustrator. Then he will read his wonderfully illustrated book, share his illustration process and read the book. Have some colorful drawing materials ready to draw an animal version of your family  as Marcos draws his family in as animals!  Visit him on instagram @cacomixtle Good for ALL ages 5 and up!

About the artist:

Marcos Almada Rivero is a Mexican author and illustrator. He has published more than 20 books both in Mexico and the US. He created the book series Óscar el tlacuache (Oscar the awesome opossum) which has been translated to Portuguese, English and Chinese. With Nancy Paulsen Books he illustrated the best-selling book Señorita Mariposa, and three other titles: How many Squirrels are in the World?, Family is Family and Baby Ballena (coming soon). Marcos has also written and directed the animated short film The March of the Missing, and created different characters for various animation projects like El Show del Dr. Gecko. 

His work usually features animals and natural landscapes and is highly influenced by his Mexican culture. 

Marcos is featured in the Society of Illustrators Original Art Exhibition, Best in Picture Books, 2024 for his wonderful Family is Family illustrations.
