Tin Pan Alley Talk
September 11 @ 6:30 pm - 8:30 pm
$10.00 – $15.00Join us for an engaging talk with Harlem historian and exhibit curator John T. Reddick as he delves into the fascinating world of Tin Pan Alley: From Ragtime to Jazz.
In this special event, John T. Reddick will share his insights into the exhibit, which features an extraordinary collection of sheet music covers and illustrations drawn from his extensive research on Black and Jewish music culture between 1890 and 1930.
Explore the stories behind the songwriters, music publishers, and performers, many of whom were Eastern European Jewish immigrants and Black Americans, who contributed to the creation of a new sound that would define American popular music in the first half of the 20th century. This talk will provide a deeper understanding of how Tin Pan Alley’s legacy continues to influence music and culture today.
This event is presented in collaboration with the Tin Pan Alley American Popular Music Project, a nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving and celebrating the rich cultural heritage of Tin Pan Alley as the birthplace of American popular music.
The post-lecture reception will feature pianist/preservationist Adrian Untermyer.
John Reddick currently serves as the Director of Community Engagement Projects at the Central Park Conservancy. Reddick has applied his knowledge of Harlem’s culture and architecture towards work he has done with the Studio Museum, the Apollo Theater and with Harlem One Stop, one of the community’s leading tourism and destination marketers . He has worked on public art & space projects at a number of Harlem-based organizations including Abyssinian Development Corporation, the Ralph Ellison Memorial Committee, Harriet Tubman Square and Frederick Douglass Circle, among others.
