SATURDAY PICTURE BOOK SPOTLIGHT featuring author and illustrator Cecilia Ruiz

Meet Cecilia Ruiz, acclaimed Mexican author and illustrator. Enjoy Cecilia’s behind the scenes presentation of her amazing illustrations, books and hear all about her background. After a fun book reading of her latest book, Mr. Fiorello’s Head, participants will explore printing and how to build a character with wonderfully basic geometric shapes and a beautiful limited color palette. All art materials and a signed copy of the book are included. Good for ages 5 and up.

$35 includes admission and workshop (including signed book and art supplies) for 1 adult + 1 child.  One book per family. Additional siblings are $10/each. 

Cecilia Ruiz is a Mexican author, illustrator and graphic designer based in New York City. Her clients include the New York TimesGoogleHermès, and Target. Cecilia teaches design and illustration at The School of Visual Arts and Queens College. Cecilia has published two adult illustrated books with Penguin Random House—The Book of Memory Gaps, and The Book of Extraordinary DeathsA Gift from Abuela, her first picture book published by Candlewick Press, is a Junior Library Guild Gold Standard Selection. Her latest picture book, published by Enchanted Lion Books, is Mr. Fiorello’s Head and was selected for the Society of Illustrators Original Art Exhibition 2023.

Cecilia’s work is anchored in traditional printmaking techniques. Her geometric, stamp-like style lends itself to simple, happy expressions, but her most compelling works are the ones in which melancholy hides within the bold colors and shapes. As an author, Cecilia aspires to create picture books that deal with universal existential themes that equally appeal to children and adults.
