About the Exhibits

Art by Juliette Collet

Made in New York sketches the outlines of a living comics scene by highlighting six of the most important comics artists working in the city today. Together, the work of Josh Bayer, E. A. Bethea, Juliette Collet, Austin English, Angela Fanche, and John Mejias paint a portrait of a vibrant contemporary milieu while pointing to a future for comics as an art form. Their work contributes to the maintenance of an independent comics scene that continues to attract and nurture new artists without significant external support. Much of the works featured have principally been either self-published or published by small, independent presses without national bookstore distribution. On display in the third floor Garden Gallery through May 4, 2024, this perceptive snapshot of a community is curated by comics specialist Bill Kartalopoulos, programming director for the SI MoCCA Arts Festival. Art by Tomer Hanuka

The exhibit Unknown Pleasures will take over the second floor Red Gallery, now renamed Orange Gallery to fit the artist’s vision. Featuring works by Tomer Hanuka and named after his newly released book, Unknown Pleasures showcases a culmination of a visual language shaped by Hanuka’s Middle Eastern childhood, the graphic boom of 80s sci-fi, and a captivating relationship with color. Featured works include commissioned work and self-initiated projects from throughout his career, such as magazine covers for the New Yorker and National Geographic; poster works for the vaunted Mondo Graphics, and book covers for Random House. Unknown Pleasures will be on display from March 6 through July 15, 2024. Learn more >
