Drawing in the Park: Introductory Workshop to Botanical Sketching

November 2 @ 1:00 pm - 3:00 pm

$40.00

Join us for a special hands-on workshop led by renowned Italian botanical artist Giacomina Ferrillo who is joining us from England. Giacomina is featured in the American Society of Botanical Artists’ 27th Annual International Exhibition, making this a unique opportunity to learn directly from an expert in the field. In this session, participants will explore the art of botanical sketching using ink pens on cold-pressed paper.

Workshop Highlights:

  • Introduction to Botanical Sketching: Discover the joy and benefits of sketching plants, both professionally and personally.
  • Techniques and Tools: Learn how to work with ink pens and cold-pressed paper, ideal for capturing fine botanical details.
  • Elements of a Sketch Page: Master the components of a well-composed page—balancing drawings, color, writing, shadows, and geometric details.
  • Composing a Page: Create harmonious and balanced pages while sketching from autumnal specimens.

After a brief studio introduction at the Society of Illustrators, we will walk to Central Park (a 10-15 minute walk, with additional walking throughout the park, so participants must be comfortable walking) to observe and draw autumnal flora under Giacomina’s expert guidance.

This workshop is perfect for both beginners and experienced artists eager to refine their botanical sketching skills in the inspiring setting of Central Park.

Giacomina Ferrillo is an Italian artist with a rich and versatile background. Graduated in Scenography, Art of Printing Techniques and Graphic Design and a Master in Illustration, she has held various professional positions in the theatrical field, interior design and publishing. As an illustrator and author she has published a dozen children’s books, translated into several languages. For many years she has been completely dedicated to botanical art, in love with the discipline and the continuous sense of amazement that it is capable of arousing. She is an ASBA member, four-time SBA exhibitor, and 2024 RHS Silver-Gilt medalist.
