Yellow Singing Sail: Growing Up, Finding Home: A Conversation with Yinfan Huang and Jeremy Nguyen

June 4 @ 6:30 pm - 8:30 pm

$10.00 – $15.00

Join us for an evening with cartoonist and illustrator Yinfan Huang as she celebrates the release of her debut graphic memoir, Yellow Singing Sail: A Memoir of an Only Child in China.

For fans of New Kid and Stealing Home, Yellow Singing Sail offers an unforgettable portrait of childhood during China’s one-child policy era. Through vibrant illustrations and heartfelt storytelling, Yinfan explores the challenges of moving to a new city, adjusting to unfamiliar customs, and learning to embrace her own identity. Set in 1990s China, this graphic memoir is a deeply personal — yet universally relatable — coming-of-age story about friendship, family, and self-acceptance.

The evening will begin with Yinfan sharing insights into her creative process, how the book came to life, and the challenges she faced while making it. She’ll be joined by fellow New Yorker cartoonist Jeremy Nguyen for a conversation about growing up, belonging, and navigating identity — drawing from both Yinfan’s experiences in China and Jeremy’s as an Asian American growing up in the U.S. The discussion will conclude with an open Q&A and a book signing with Yinfan.

Born and raised in China, Yinfan Huang is a New York-based cartoonist and illustrator who creates joyful, whimsical work for children’s books, magazines, brands and institutions worldwide. Some of her clients include The New Yorker, New York Times, Warby Parker and 3M Post-it Notes. She came to the United States in 2011 by herself to pursue her passion for illustration and earn a quality education in her chosen field. She has since published several children’s books and illustrated for children’s and adult magazines in China, North America, the United Kingdom and the Netherlands. She has been contributing cartoons to The New Yorker since 2020 and has won prestigious awards from American Illustration, the Society of Illustrators and the World Illustration Awards. Yinfan lives in NYC with her two cats and two chinchillas. Yellow Singing Sail: A Memoir of an Only Child in China is her debut graphic memoir as an author-illustrator.
