The River Oblivion
Medium: Gouache, colored pencil

The River Oblivion, written by Laura Gibson, is a story about the author’s grandmother who suffered memory loss from Alzheimer’s. I wanted to get the tone right for this piece – we didn’t want it to feel too cheerful, since the story holds light and dark in balance. Dusk felt like the right time of day and set the stage for a warm palette and long shadows. The river was a must-have element; it separates the small figure from her A-frame cabin, where Gibson’s grandmother spent time in the Sierra Nevada mountains and would later wander and get lost.
