Non Coding Genome
Medium: Digital
Like most geneticists, Ryan Doan learned in school that the vast majority of the genome is useless — so-called “junk DNA” that doesn’t code for proteins and thus can be ignored. But a few years ago, Doan began to be bothered by the fact that autism genetics research, which has largely focused on the coding genome, isn’t making the progress many had hoped for. Most autistic people still don’t have a genetic explanation for their condition. So he decided to turn to the largely unexplored 99 percent of the genome beyond the protein-coding exome.
