This illustration accompanies an article about the book Elderflora: A Modern History of Ancient Trees. I wanted to convey the awe that these trees inspire—both in their size and their perceived permanence in our world. Ancient trees offer a great deal of insight into the past yet can also provide a roadmap for long-term thinking on dealing with the climate crisis.
