This piece accompanied a book review of Never Turn Back by Julian Gewritz; much of the book centers on former Chinese Premier and General Secretary Zhao Ziyang, whose economic reform policies and support of 1989 Tiananmen Square protestors lead to his ouster from political life. It was important to make this piece about real people and specific historical imagery and not abstractions as is often the case when talking about China.
