Virtual Saturday Stories featuring illustrator Darcy Day Zoells

April 20 @ 10:30 am - 11:30 am

Presented monthly, Saturday Stories invites guest illustrators to lead children and their adult companions in a read-aloud workshop related to the wide range of materials and processes that illustrators use to create their picture books.

Meet Darcy Day Zoells from her studio in Chicago! Darcy will share a behind the scenes about herself and how she created the story and pictures for her award winning book, The New Bicycle, an imaginative story layered with meaning. Mari sets off with her little dog on her new bicycle and travels from her simple neighborhood into increasingly fantastic settings. On the journey, she overcomes obstacles to make her own way, find friends and discover new places before returning home.

After reading her book, Darcy will teach an exciting drawing workshop titled Fun with Faces! An illustrator often must show a character in different emotions. After looking at some examples, Darcy will lead participants through a fun exercise that will explore creating emotion through line. Art supplies needed are: 8.5 x 11 copy paper, art supplies for drawing and coloring such as pencil, pen, markers, highlighters or colored pencils.

Good for all ages 5 and up.

Darcy Day Zoells is the author and illustrator of The New Bicycle (Clavis Books, 2023) which won the Gold Medal in the Key Colors Competition and is an Illinois Reads selection. It has also been included in the Bank Street Best Picture Books in the Spanish Language (La bicicleta nueva). Her illustrations have received many awards and been exhibited at the Bologna Children’s Book Fair. When not walking her enormous rescue dog, Darcy can be spotted riding her bike on the lake front or sketching at concerts, on the bus, or just about anywhere.
