The Art of Wordless Storytelling

January 10 @ 6:30 pm - 7:30 pm

Picture books, comics, and graphic novels each have a long history of telling visual stories without text. These works sit outside the mainstream of their respective fields, often viewed merely as curiosities by the general public. But these wordless stories are complex, innovative, and beautiful, showcasing a different and thrilling way to experience reading. David Wiesner will trace the histories of each of those forms, highlighting important examples within each field. Using picture books, he will look at the ways wordless books function, from the viewpoint of the artist and of the reader.

FREE with registration.

David Wiesner has spent most of his career creating wordless stories in picture books and digital media. He recently curated an exhibition for The Eric Carle Museum called Speechless: The Art Of Wordless Picture Books. David received a Caldecott Medal for three of his picture books: Tuesday, The Three Pigs, and Flotsam, and he received a Caldecott Honor for three others: Free Fall, Sector 7, and Mr. Wuffles! (All but one are wordless). In 2008 he was a finalist for the Hans Christian Andersen Award.
