This painting was created for Giant Robot Store’s group exhibition entitled “Deep Forest.” During the summer of 2020, COVID-19 had swept the U.S., the rise against systemic racism had boiled over, and being in lockdown had hit me with a free fall of fluctuating emotions. To capture these indiscernible feelings, I illustrated a tightly-rendered tattooed figure laying in a resplendent field of loosely-painted grass and cherry blossoms, with parts of the body engulfed into the environment–suggesting a yearning for respite and self-reflection.
