Celebrating its 62nd anniversary of publication, the Society of Illustrators is pleased to present the premier showcase for illustrators, featuring the most outstanding works created throughout each year. Open to artists worldwide, thousands of entries are considered by a jury of professionals, which include renowned illustrators, art directors and designers.
Gold and silver medals are presented to the illustrators and art directors whose works are judged the best in each category.
The first part of this two-part exhibit features work in the Advertising, Institutional, Surface/ Product Design, and Uncommissioned categories.
Artwork in the Advertising category are works created to sell a product, such as consumer ads, billboards, theater posters, and point-of-purchase. Silver medals are awarded to Anna and Elena Balbusso for The Magic Flute (Client: The Criterion Collection USA | AD: Eric Skillman), Leslie Herman for Fat Orange Cat (Client: Fat Orange Cat Brew Co. | AD: Sheila Mullen, Mike Klucznik, Alex Blank), and David Plunkert for Theater Project 2019 Post Series (Client: Theatre Project | AD: David Plunkert). Gold medals are awarded to Edward Kinsella for Berberian Sound Studio (Client: Black Dragon Press | AD: James Park), Tatsuro Kiuchi for Hiball (Client: Beam Suntory, AD: Chikala Funada), and Yuko Shimizu for Godzilla Showa Era Films Box Set (Client: Criterion Collection | AD: Eric Skillman).
The Institutional category includes work commissioned by an institution such as government services, in-house, or a corporation. Silver medals are awarded to John Ferry for Modern #1 (Client: Sherry Leedy Contemporary Art | Client: Allison King), Johanna Goodman for The Women of the Female Design Council (Client: The Female Design Council | AD: Lora Appleton), and Greg Kletsel for The Jellies- Season 2 Title Cards (Client: Augenblick Studios | AD: Aaron Augenblick). Gold medals are awarded to João Fazenda for Yellow Cape (Client: Porto City Council), Dylan Glynn for Lit Lanturnt (Client: Gardiner Museum | AD: Natalie Hume), and Tatsuro Kiuchi for UNIQLO Sustainability (Client: UNIQLO | AD: Masashi Matsuie).
The Surface/ Product Design category, which features work used on merchandise such as carpets, pillows, rugs, clothing etc., and can include repeat patterns seen on wrapping paper, wallpaper and other various textiles. Silver medals are awarded to Jordan Awan for JAM by Jordan (Client: JAM | AD: Sam Jayne), Marc Burckhardt for Gucci Homecoming (Client: Gucci | AD: Alesandro Michele), and Jason Sturgill for Honeycone (Client: Wolves & People Farmhouse Brewery). Gold medals are awarded to Jordan Kay for Starbucks Sumatra (Client: Starbucks | AD: Jeff Wilkson), Kristina Micotti for Blankets, and Olimpia Zangoli for Windows (Client: UNIQLO | AD: Dude Agency).
Uncommissioned pieces include all self-generated work such as portfolio samples. Silver medals are awarded to Toshiki Nakamura for Dear Grandpa…, Shannon Ryan for The Schoolyard, and Gizem Vural for The Fade Out. Gold medals are awarded to Pete Ryan for Fractured Returns, Qianwen Tu for Chou Chou, and Taili Wu for Bike Shop.
An Opening Reception and Awards Ceremony will take place on Friday, January 10th.
