Transforming Artwork and Ideas into Top-Selling Products

Join us for an evening with highly skilled and successful art/design professionals representing both the creation and ideation as well as the manufacturing side of Surface/Product Design. This exciting field is a newly added category to the Society’s annual competition and showcase for illustrators. The evening’s talented panel will discuss how they’ve translated and transitioned their artwork and creative ideas into functional top-selling products, as well as explore sourcing and marketing strategies.

Malene Barnett
Malene B
Malene Barnett is a cross-media artist and founder of Malene B Atelier, a New York based art & design practice specializing in fine art, limited edition prints, textile design and design products. Her work has been commissioned by premier hotel chains, landmark office buildings, and luxury private development firms. A cultural enthusiast and passionate entrepreneur, Malene collaborates with commercial brands and international artisans. She is the author of the Malene B Essentials e-guide series, a TEDX speaker and an industry commentator for TV and radio. Her work has also featured in leading, international design and lifestyle publications.   
Judy Ross Artist/Designer
Judy Ross Textiles is a luxury textile design brand that is known for its distinctive signature style of its artist founder, Judy Ross. Combining her iconic look with hand-embroidery done by artisans, she has created products for the home with a modern feel using old world techniques. From pillows to curtains to rugs, these bespoke works can be seen in luxury hotels, buzzworthy restaurants, and homes around the globe. Clients include the Ritz Carlton, Four Seasons, Grand Hyatt, W Hotels, Wyndham Worldwide and Barneys New York. She has been working her wonder for over 25 years and a number of her textile pieces reside in the permanent textile collection at the Art Institute of Chicago. 
Jennifer Orkin Lewis, Illustrator
Jennifer is an artist, illustrator and author who working just outside of New York City. Her paintings are primarily gouache and watercolor but also include ink, pencil and the occasional marker. She has worked with clients such as Anthropologie, Abrams Books, Chronicle Books, Flow Magazine, Kate Spade, Seal Press, TeNeues, Eeboo and many more. Her first book, published last year with Abrams books, is a creative guided journal that helps encourage people to find a bit of daily inspiration and develop a daily drawing habit. There are currently two more books in the works that will be out in 2018/19. Jennifer also teaches painting classes on Creativebug as well as workshops and retreats. She spent many years after graduating from RISD as a textile stylist designing prints for children’s clothing and lingerie.
Jill Malek Artist/Designer
After art directing for the Westin Brand at Starwood Hotels and Resorts, Jill Malek launched her company of bespoke wallcoverings, luxury packaging, and custom artwork for contract hospitality. Malek has completed custom commissions for the Rockwell Group, Vosges Haute-Chocolate, MTV Networks, Foley and Corinna, J. Josephson, Mulo Shoes, Celebrity Event Planner, David Monn, and LG Hausys. Her work has appeared in many high-profile global interiors, including 50 floors of the Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas Hotel and Resort Casino, and many other hotels worldwide, flagship offices of Google, YouTube and Blue Apron, stores including Steve Madden, Saks Fifth Avenue, Bloomingdales, Giggle, Anthropologie, and Harvey Nichols in Dubai, Bliss Spas, the ducduc showrooms in NY, and the sets of Jessica Jones Netflix, Gossip Girl, and Billions. In 2012, seven of her patterns were acquired from the Brooklyn Museum as part of their permanent decorative arts collection. In 2013, after recognizing a void in the children’s wallcovering market, she formed another company with famed children’s decorators, Sissy+Marley, to create inspired sophisticated patterns for children. In 2014, Jill Malek, along with Sissy+Marley, were proud recipients of the coveted ICFF Editors Award in the Wallcovering category. Most recently, in collaboration with Rockwell Group, Jill designed a custom felt mural for Yellow Magnolia Cafe at the newly-renovated Brooklyn Botanic Gardens, fabricated by Maya Romanoff with flower appliques by C3 Design.
Vikki Chu, Illustrator/Designer
Vikki Chu is an illustrator and designer based in Brooklyn. She was born in Massachusetts and grew up mostly in New Jersey. Her clients include Chronicle Books, Anthropologie, Penguin Random House, Adobe, and One Kings Lane.
