The Original Art 2020: The Exhibit

October 28, 2020 @ 12:00 am - December 23, 2020 @ 11:59 pm

Founded in 1980 by illustrators’ agent and art director Dilys Evans, this exhibit showcases original art from the year’s best children’s books as determined by a jury of outstanding illustrators, art directors, and editors. The jury also selects Gold and Silver Medal recipients for the year’s exhibit.

The 2020 Gold Medal is awarded to Cátia Chien for The Bear and the Moon (Chronicle Books). 2020 Silver Medals are awarded to Frank Morrison for R-E-S-P-E-C-T and to Jillian Tamaki for My Best Friend (both Simon & Schuster / Atheneum Books for Young Readers).

The Original Art honors exceptional children’s book artists in two other award categories each year.

The Dilys Evans Founder’s Award celebrates the year’s most promising new talent in the field. The 2020 jury has selected Peter Van den Ende for The Wanderer (Levine Querido / The Em Querido List).

The Lifetime Achievement Awards recognize artists whose body of work documents an innovative and pioneering contribution to the field. Nominees in two categories, Contemporary and Posthumous, are put forward by past chairs of The Original Art. Then the winners are selected by artists whose work has been juried into the show in previous years. This year’s Lifetime Achievement Award winners are Allen Say and Roger Duvoisin

Due to guidelines and precautions issued by the CDC and New York State, programming for the show will be very different this year. The Society is pleased to present both an on-site exhibit as well as a virtual exhibit displaying works created by featured artists. To view the on-site exhibit, guests must plan ahead and refer to our safety measures as well as purchase tickets online prior to arriving to the Museum.

For those in the community who are unable to visit the exhibit in person, the Society has created a virtual gallery for you to enjoy from the comfort of your home! The ticket price to view the online gallery is the same as for the on-site gallery (click here to learn about pricing). Entry to both galleries is free for Society of Illustrator Members (click here to learn how to become a Member). Both exhibits will open to the public beginning October 28th and ending December 30th, 2020. A full list of featured artists can be found online here.

Selected books, medal recipients, and award winners will be recognized and honored during the virtual Awards Ceremony, to be held on Thursday, November 5, beginning at 6:00 pm. Tickets are on sale for $15. The ceremony will take place on Zoom, and all guests are required to register with an account prior to the ceremony. Please visit the ceremony page for more details.

In addition, the Society will be hosting several community events and programs in conjunction with the exhibit. Dates and descriptions will be posted soon.

Please consider making a donation to help the Society get through these difficult times. The American Alliance of Museums (AAM) reports that without assistance, one in three museums in the US will close permanently. Your generous gift will support the Museum and our educational initiatives. DONATE TODAY

Thank you to The Bruce J. Heim Foundation for supporting The Original Art. Their generous gift and belief that books play a vital role in the development of a child’s imagination and dreams will greatly aid our educational programming for K-12 students.

The Original Art is supported in part by NYC Dept of Cultural Affairs.
