Illustrators 63: Uncommissioned, Advertising, Institutional, Surface/Product Design

The Museum of American Illustration at the Society of Illustrators is proud to present Illustrators 63, featuring the most outstanding works by leading contemporary illustrators worldwide and voted on by a prestigious jury, which include renowned illustrators, art directors, and designers.

For 63 years, the Annual has provided a platform to our global community to express, through illustration, the events and movements of our times. The significance of the events of this year, documented through your visual narratives, will become an important archive. This show is a true reflection of our times and shows that our community is deeply thoughtful and engaged in the state of our world.

Illustrators 63 will be a unique and memorable enterprise for our community. This year, we will be sharing a very different experience for the exhibit and ceremony. In order to protect public health and safety, much of the Annual will be virtual. The online gallery will allow viewers to access the show from the comfort of their homes, and will grant 24 hour access to view the show upon purchase of the virtual ticket. Virtual tickets will be available once the online gallery opens on January 13. Online viewing dates will be extended past the onsite gallery dates.

The Society will be hosting a virtual awards ceremony. Details and registration can be found here. 

In addition to the online ceremony and gallery, the Society will continue to host a controlled-attendance exhibit at our Museum in NYC. Tickets must be purchased in advance to visit the Society’s headquarters. 

The Annual is broken up into two shows. Part One features work in the Uncommissioned, Advertising, Institutional and Surface/Product Design categories. Gold and silver medals were awarded by the jury to the top pieces in each category.

Uncommissioned pieces include all self-generated work. Gold medals are awarded to Miriam Martincic for Having It All, Nicole Rifkin for Black and White Studies of an Escape, and Qianhui Yu for Self Gazing. Silver medals are awarded to Dani Choi for The Garden of Misfits, Sonia Pulida for Friends, and Haleigh Mun for The Other Night @SOI.

Advertising illustration includes work created to sell a product, usually commissioned by an ad agency. Examples include consumer ads in magazines, television and web, billboards, point-of-purchase, and theater posters. Gold medals are awarded to Melad Jajou for The Lights in the Sky are Stars (Client: Long Winter), Max Loeffler for Makers of Beauty (Client: Santoni, AD: Maximilian Mauracher), and Armando Veve for Mango Lemonade Fantasy (Client: 360i for Truly Hard Seltzer, AD: Adrienne Darnell). Silver medals are awarded to Sebastian Curi for Jovia Social Media Package (Client: OTTO, AD: Lindsey Blake), Aaron Fernandez for Epic Commute (Client: MTA Arts & Design), and Kadir Nelson for BLACKISH TEA (Client: ABC/BLACKISH, AD: Jenny Savitt).

Institutional illustration includes work commissioned by an institution such as government services, in-house, or a corporation, and can be featured on announcements, annual reports, calendars, corporate projects, government service projects, greeting cards, newsletters, and in-house publications. Gold medals are awarded to Shira Inbar for Stamp Set “50th Anniversary of the Moon Landing”, San Marino (Client: San Marino Philatelic Numismatic Office, AD: Gianni Sinni), Kadir Nelson for After the Storm (Client: CBS Sunday Morning/The JKBN Group, LLC), and Leonardo Santamaria for NPR Invisibilia: Two Heartbeats A Minute (Client: NPR, AD: Emily Bogle). Silver medals are awarded to Marcos Chin for Prep Awareness (Client: APICHA; Asian Pacific Islander Coalition for HIV/AIDS, AD: Phillip Miner), André da Loba for Lisbon 5L (Client: Lisbon City Hall, AD: Book Tailors), and Greg Kletsel for Stop the Spread – State of New York Covid-19 PSA (Client: The State of New York, AD: Devin Clark / Augenblick Studios).

Surface/ Product Design includes work appearing in three-dimension including illustrations created for merchandise such as carpets, pillows, rugs, clothing, food and beverage labels, etc. as well as repeat patterns seen on wrapping paper, wallpaper, and other various textiles. Gold medals are awarded to Marc Burckhardt for Gucci Storefront (Client: Gucci, AD: Alberto Russo), Miguel Porlan for Banana (Client: Cuero Records), and Yuko Shimizu for Interactive Exhibit: Hanami (Client: Artechouse). Silver medals are awarded to Mariko Jesse for Hong Kong Willow Pattern Ceramics (Client: Lane Crawford Department Store, HK, AD: Louis Papachristou), Tran Nguyen for Metamorphosis (Client: Pow! Wow! Worldwide, AD: Jasper Wong), and Nicole Xu for Treetop (Client: Throw & Co, AD: Trevor Basset).
