About the Designers:
Mia Rubin graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Parsons the New School for Design in the spring of 2017. She majored in Fashion Design. Mia was accepted into the Experimental Knitwear Design Program and the BA Fashion Print Program at Central Saint Martins – UAL during her junior year of college. Mia was in 1 in 15 students to be accepted to the Fashion Study Abroad program at Central Saint Martins. There she discovered her love for Print and Textile design and went onto specialize in Print Design. Mia creates her own Print and Textile designs for all of her collections and uses those elements of design to tell stories through her garments. Mia has worked directly with the adoptee community in the NYC area to translate their expeirences through original textiles, embroidery work, and print design.
Shawna Wu (b. Singapore) is a New York based Taiwanese artist who works sensuously with garments and textiles. “A dressing is for a wound…” – Her work explores the ways in which material culture addresses our understandings of (and gaps in) intimacy, empathy and cultural nuance. Her pieces are elevated through traditional, meticulous handweaving, knitwear and textile making craftsmanship, reiterating the idea of a deliberate, thoughtful material consciousness. Fully fashioning, natural dyeing and ethical sourcing are all techniques that she employs within a loving and sustainable vision. For Society of the Illustrators Fashion Sketch Night, she will be showcasing handmade knit-felts, chinese knot harnesses, and more from her latest live garment installation held in Singapore last December.
