Design with Intent: A Conversation on Surface & Product Design

Join illustrators Terri Kasuba, Ilya Milstein, Jason Sturgill, and Vikki Zhang for a discussion on surface/product design. Moderated by Melinda Beck.

About the speakers: 

Terri Fry Kasuba is an illustrator living in the suburbs of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She majored in Business at Villanova University and worked in advertising agencies before returning to school at Tyler School of Art for graphic design. There she fell in love with illustration and storytelling. She works in her home studio, where she is frequently visited by her husband, two boys and 1 dog.

She has been included in American Illustration and Society of Illustrators Annuals and displays her art in galleries throughout the United States. Clients include Blue Q, The New York Times, Washington Post, Galison, Roger la Borde and Quarto Publishing.

Ilya Milstein is an Italian-born, Australian-raised, and New York-based self-trained illustrator. His work has been recognised by American Illustration and Communication Arts, he has received a gold medal from the Society of Illustrators, and he was named an ADC Young Gun by the The One Club for Creativity. He is commercially represented in  the US, UK, and Australia by the Jacky Winter Group.

Jason Sturgill is an illustrator, art director, consultant and artist based in Portland, Oregon. He has worked in a variety of roles over his 20 year career that has led him to where he is now. Everything from starting a record label in 1997 working with Modest Mouse, to working in interactive and strategy at Wieden & Kennedy, packaging design at Dark Horse comics and marketing and product design at Nike SB. For the last nine years he’s been working as a freelance illustrator and designer along with speaking engagements and art shows. He enjoys working on a variety of projects at different scales including work for small businesses as well as international corporations.

Vikki Zhang is a Chinese-born  illustrator based in New York. She received her BFA in Digital Game Design from Communication University of China in 2016 and her MFA in Illustration as Visual Essay from School of Visual Arts in 2018. Vikki works on a variety of projects including book publishing, advertising, editorial, packaging, film, and product design. Lee & Low,Mcdonald’s, Washington Post, Hunan Children’s Publishing House, and many others. 

Melinda Beck is an illustrator, animator, and graphic designer who has had the pleasure of working for such clients as: 2K Games, Harper’s Magazine, The New York Public Library, Nickelodeon, Nike, The New Yorker, The New York Times, Random House, Southern Poverty Law Center, Target, Time Magazine and the United States Postal Service. Her artwork has received numerous awards including two Emmy nominations and medals from the Society of Illustrators. A series of her political illustrations has been acquired by the Library of Congress for their permanent collection. Melinda served as the vice president of ICON9, the Illustration Conference, has taught at Parsons School of design, and been a visiting lecturer at a variety of institutions around the globe. She attended the Rhode Island School of Design and is based in New York City where she lives with her two teenage daughters. Recently she has created an eighty foot mural for Mural Arts Philadelphia and a series of murals for the newly renovated Mid-Manhattan New York Public Library on 42nd and 5th ave.
