Art Spiegelman, Anita Kunz, & Steve Brodner discuss The Life & Times of Art Young
January 11, 2018
Join us for an evening with comics art giant Art Spiegelman and acclaimed illustrator Anita Kunz as they discuss the lasting influence of 20th century political cartoonist Art Young, with master caricaturist Steve Brodner moderating the discussion. The three will examine the historical significance of Young’s work, and its relevance in today’s artistic and political landscape.
Images for discussion will be drawn from the 2017 retrospective To Laugh That We May Not Weep: The Life & Times of Art Young by Glenn Bray and Frank M. Young. Copies will be available for purchase after the event.
Art Spiegelman is an American author and illustrator whose two-part Holocaust narrative, Maus, helped to establish comics storytelling and the graphic novel as a sophisticated literary medium. Maus earned Spiegelman a Special Award Pulitzer Prize in 1992. Spiegelman also cofounded the 1980’s avant-garde comix journal Raw and, more recently, the children’s anthology Little Lit with his wife, Françoise Mouly.
Canadian by birth, Anita Kunz has had work published in Time Magazine, Rolling Stone, Vanity Fair, The New Yorker, and many others. She has been honored with many prestigious awards and medals and her critically acclaimed paintings and sculptures have appeared in galleries worldwide, including the Norman Rockwell Museum in Massachusetts and the Teatrio Cultural Association in Rome Italy.
Illustrator, caricaturist and political commentator Steve Brodner has been working for publications throughout the US since the 1970s. He has been a regular contributor to Rolling Stone and The New Yorker and has won numerous awards from the Society of Illustrators, Art Directors Club, the Society of Publication Designers, the Society of Newspaper Designers, American Illustration, and Communication Arts. Brodner is accepted in the fields of journalism and the graphic arts as a master of the editorial idiom.
