2007 Fall Lecture Series

Society of Illustrators invites you to attend it's 2007 Fall Lecture Series:
OCTOBER 3—AN EVENING WITH INGO FAST
Ingo Fast’s year long, slow trip around the world posed difficulties not only in respect to the various modes of transportation he chose, but in how he would continue his work as an illustrator. Also a challenge was discovering which means of communication would be available to transmit his sketches and illustrations: from slow dial-up internet connections to not too stable satellite phone-to-laptop hook-ups.

Special Online Presentation of the panel on October 24
The Society of Illustrators will be streaming live that evening. Please tune in to the website for the link to the webcast and further information.

OCTOBER 24—WHAT’S SO FUNNY?
With moderator Dilys Evans, Founder of The Original Art
Harry Bliss is a cartoonist and cover artist for New Yorker magazine. He studied painting at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and illustration at the University of the Arts (BFA) and Syracuse University (MA). The first children’s book he illustrated, A Fine, Fine School by Sharon Creech, was a New York Times bestseller— as were Diary of a Worm and Diary of a Spider by Doreen Cronin. With Tribune Media, a top syndication service, Harry also creates a daily one-panel strip titled Bliss which appears in newspapers across the country.
Joanna Cotler is Senior Vice President and Publisher of Joanna Cotler Books, an imprint of HarperCollins. Her authors and illustrators include Sharon Creech, Patricia MacLachlan, Art Spiegelman, Jamie Lee Curtis, Clive Barker, Laura Cornell, Doreen Cronin, Harry Bliss, David Diaz, William Steig and Francesca Lia Block. Many of her books have been New York Times best sellers, two were designated Newbery Honor Books and one was a National Book Award winner. Joanna is also a painter and has exhibited her work in San Francisco and New York.
John Grandits is a typographer, poet, art director, designer and writer. Oddly enough, he didn’t become funny until he was 55 years old. He has worked for Cricket, Muse and Click magazines, Crown Books for Children and Random House. He has also art directed adult trade and children’s textbooks. He is the author/designer of two books of concrete poems for kids—Technically, It’s Not My Fault and Blue Lipstick—and he has two picture books under contract. His ultimate goal is to design the perfectly illegible font.
Betsy Lewin graduated from Pratt Institute where she studied illustration. For a time she designed greeting cards. Then she began to write and illustrate for children. Betsy is known for the lively, comic whimsy that infuses her work, but she also paints in a naturalistic style. Many of her books have appeared on the New York Times best seller list and her awards include a silver medal from the Society of Illustrators and a Caldecott Honor for Click, Clack, Moo; Cows That Type by Doreen Cronin.
NOVEMBER 7—EVERETT RAYMOND KINSTLER PAINTS TERRY BROWN
Ray Kinstler is America’s leading portrait painter with Presidential portraits and other notable commissions. Terry Brown is the Director Emeritus of the Society of Illustrators. Ray will paint Terry while the two reminisce about their 25 year friendship, their shared appreciation of the life of James Montgomery Flagg and involvement with the New York art world. Ray’s long career as a pulp artist, illustrator and now portraitist is well documented in two recent books which will be available for signing. Terry’s 34 years at the Society have bridged the organization from a local gathering spot to an international leader in illustration.
