2009 Student Scholarship
May 6- June 5, 2009
"2009 Student Scholarship Competition" selected by a celebrated jury, this exhibit features the most mature, sophisticated and well crafted illustrations of the year from top level college illustration students around the country. On display at the Museum of American Illustration from May 6-June 6, 2009.

The Museum of American Illustration at the Society of Illustrators presents the 2009 Student Scholarship Competition featuring the works of over one hundred of today’s top college level illustration students. For thirty years, this Competition and Exhibit has opened the door for many of today’s professionals including Kadir Nelson, James Bennett, Gwenda Kaczor, Dan Dos Santos, James Jean, and many more.

A jury of professional peers including illustrators and art directors have chosen the most outstanding works created throughout the year. Pieces are accepted based on the quality of technique, concept and skill of medium used. After reviewing fifty six hundred submissions, only one hundred and forty four were selected for this year’s Exhibition.

The Society as well as various other generous private and corporate donors will grant over $50,000 in scholarships to the best students featured in the competition. Beginning May 6 through June 6, 2009, the Museum of American Illustration will display the student’s original artwork as well as a full color catalog. Awards and certificates will be given to the students during the Opening Reception on May 8, 2009.

Also awarded during the Opening Reception are this year's Distinguished Educators in the Arts. Thomas Sgouros of the Rhode Island School of Design will be honored for the Contemporary Distinguished Educator. Thomas Fogarty and Frank Reilly of the Art Students League will be awarded posthumously. This prestigious award is presented to an educator who has made a strong impact on illustration as both a teacher and an artist. A filmed interview and demo from the 1930s by Reilly of the masters of illustration including Arthur William Brown, Dean Cornwell and Harvey Dunn will also be on display.
