Dear Society Members,
The Society of Illustrators has agreed to become a member of the Authors Coalition of America LLC (the “Authors Coalition”). The Authors Coalition is comprised of a number of US-based membership organizations, and its purposes include receiving and distributing non-title specific royalties to its member organizations, assisting in the further development of collective licensing programs and acting for the general benefit of authors. In general, the Authors Coalition collects royalties for photocopying conducted outside of the United States and distributes these royalties to its member organizations. For these purposes, the term “author” includes not only novelists and other writers, but also songwriters and artists.
To date, the Society has received a total of $170,000 from the Authors Coalition. As the Society is a charitable organization exempt from tax pursuant to section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code, it must use the funds it receives in furtherance of its charitable purposes, and it is prohibited from distributing these funds to its members. Of the total amount received thus far from the Authors Coalition, the Society has granted $65,000 to the American Society of Illustrators Partnership (“ASIP”). Any amounts that the Society grants to ASIP must be restricted for uses and activities that further the Society’s charitable purposes.
The remaining amount received from the Authors Coalition, and any amounts that are received in the future, will be used in furtherance of the Society’s charitable activities. The Society reports on its use of all of its funds through its Form 990, a copy of which is available by written request from the Society (Attn: Anelle Miller) and at www.guidestar.org. In addition, the Society prepares audited financial statements, which are available by written request from the Society’s office (Attn: Anelle Miller). Copies may also be requested from the NYS Attorney General’s Charities Bureau, Attn: FOIL Officer, 120 Broadway, New York, NY 10271.
If you have any questions regarding the Society’s participation in the Authors Coalition, please contact Anelle Miller.
