2009 ANNUAL SCHOLARSHIP COMPETITION
Since its inception in 1981, the Society has awarded more than $1.5 million to deserving students in this unique competition. And once again, the Society gratefully acknowledges the support of the donations and bequests established in memory of family and colleagues.

President’s Message
50 to 1 odds would be great in the lottery, but can be discouraging in an art contest. The Society receives over 5000 entries for this show each year and the jury takes about 100. Many fine pieces miss selection by one vote.

The images in this catalog represent the commitment to excellence made by students who wreck their jeans with oil paint, flatten their eyeballs staring at screens, redraw the hand for the thousandth time and skip the iPod upgrade so they can buy a decent watercolor brush. The work also speaks of the professional artists who teach in these programs, dragging their own books to class to provide the best instruction possible. My personal thanks goes to our director, Anelle Miller, and Education Comittee Chair, Scott Bakal, for their tireless effort and care in preparing this exhibition. The Society thanks all students and instructors for their participation, and the generous individuals and foundations who help fund the scholarship awards.

The Society is committed to helping future genrations of illustrators. The artists represented in this catalog are among those who will inherit that charge. Congratulations to all of our exhibitors.

Chairman's Message
80 Schools. 5598 Entries. 140 Selected. $60,000 in Scholarships.

Those numbers alone should tell you that this is one of the hardest competitions to get into even at professional show standards and the most money given compared to any competition..

The Society of Illustrators Student Scholarship Competition is the most competitive and prestigious of juried shows and I would like to congratulate all of the students and educators that excel above and beyond to be included in this year’s show..

The work in this catalog exhibits the most mature, sophisticated and well crafted art of the year that has come out of art schools and has been selected by our celebrated jury. This work is a testament to the dedication of the educators and the drive and passion of the students to be the best illustrators that they can be..

I’d like to thank my wonderful committee; Lisa Cyr, Dan Dos Santos, Mark Korsak and Murray Tinkelman who helped pick a most scrutinizing jury. The superior jury that this committee selected traveled from far and wide to help select work..

I would also like to thank the entire Society of Illustrators staff for their help in organizing the competition with singular thanks to the Society’s Director Anelle Miller and Scholarship Coordinator Kate Feirtag for their dedicated work.

Finally, a thank you to all of the generous supporters and organizations that help fund the awards. Congratulations!

Scott Bakal
Education Committee Chairman, 2006-2009

A special congratulations to contemporary honoree and friend Tom Sgouros, historical honorees Frank Reilly and Thomas Fogarty for receiving this year’s Distinguished Educator in the Arts Awards.
