Students

2008 ANNUAL SCHOLARSHIP COMPETITION
Since its inception in 1981, the Society has awarded more than $1.5 million to deserving students in this unique competition. And once again, the Society gratefully acknowledges the support of The Greenwich Workshop, The Illustration Academy, The Norman Rockwell Museum, the artists who participated in "Art Out Loud" and the late Arthur Zankel and other bequests established in memory of family and colleagues.
President’s Message
Congratulations to all of the students whose work was chosen. You have been selected as the best of this year’s competition and should take pride in the fact that you have been judged to be in the top 3% of the 5673 entrants. And congratulations to your instructors and the schools they represent. The motivation you’ve found to inspire you to be your best is a result of their deep belief in your abilities and in the art of illustration.

Since its inception in 1981, the Society has awarded more than $1.5 million to deserving students in this unique competition. The Society gratefully acknowledges the support of all of the generous individuals and organizations that help fund the awards.

I would also like to thank all of the artists who donated works to our Christmas Auction this year. This annual event raises money to help fund these awards. Thanks are also extended to the Society’s Director Emeritus, Terrence Brown, our Director, Anelle Miller and her staff for their unflagging work behind the scenes.

Finally, congratulations go to this year’s chair, Scott Bakal. Along with his skilled guidance of the jurying process, Scott worked hard to automate the entry process, enabling jurors to more easily evaluate the illustrations and better appreciate the high quality of the works submitted.

So relish the moment and enjoy your recognition. Understand that you are at the beginning of a road that many accomplished illustrators have traveled from whom one can learn. The Society of Illustrators is the source where one can tap into this knowledge. Visit our exhibitions, attend our lecture series, enter our competitions, join.
The rewards are great.

Chairman's Message
The Society of Illustrators Student Scholarship Competition is the most competitive and prestigious of juried shows. I would like to congratulate all of the exceptional students and educators in this year’s show.

This is the first year that a digital entry portal was created to help facilitate the jurying process. It was an astounding success! The ability to upload images digitally created a huge influx of new entries. This year we received over 1500 more entries than last year.

The work in this catalog exhibits the most mature, sophisticated and well crafted art produced this year by students and selected by our celebrated jury. For the last few years I have had the privilege of seeing the student exhibitions and every year I am astounded by the quality of work. This work is a testament to the dedication of the educators and the drive and passion of the students to be the best illustrators they can be.

I’d like to thank my wonderful committee; Lisa Cyr, Dan Dos Santos, Mark Korsak and Murray Tinkelman who helped pick a most scrutinizing jury. The superior jury that this committee selected traveled from far and wide (and even through a snow storm!) to help select work from 5,673 entries from 88 schools. I would also like to thank the entire Society of Illustrators staff for their help in organizing the competition with singular thanks to the Society’s Director Anelle Miller and Scholarship Coordinator Kate Feirtag. Additional thanks goes to Terry Brown, Director Emeritus for helping me learn the ropes over the last few years. Finally, a thank you to all of the generous individuals and organizations that help fund the awards.

Congratulations!

Scott Bakal
Education Committee Chairman, 2006-2007

A special congratulations to contemporary selection Vincent di Fate and to the historical selection Burne Hogarth for receiving this year's Distinguished Educator in the Arts Awards.
