An Invitation To Submit Entries To The 50th Annual Exhibition

Works selected by the juries will be shown at the Museum of American Illustration at the Society of Illustrators, 128 East 63rd Street, from January 30 to April 26, 2008. The entire show will be presented in full color in ILLUSTRATORS 50, “America’s Original Annual of Illustration.” A selection of 40 works will tour U.S. colleges through June 2009, the 27th educational traveling exhibition.
DEADLINE EXTENDED TO OCTOBER 19, 2007
ELIGIBILITY
Any illustration created or initially published between October 1, 2006 and October 1, 2007 that has not been accepted in the Annual previously, is eligible. International entries are welcome. Each submission will receive consideration by every member of the jury for its category. Please be certain that the original art will be available for exhibition and can remain at the Society from January through May 2008. High-quality prints will be hung in the case of digitally created art only.

CATEGORIES
All commissioned work whether published or not, should be entered in one of the first six categories: Sequential, Editorial, Book, Advertising, Institutional, and Uncommissioned.

SEQUENTIAL
Any multi-image project for which a sequence of images is necessary to fully convey an idea or story. Examples: work that has been produced or published as comic books, journalism, graphic novels, pre-production art and animation (including television, film, web or video games). Individual images from a sequential entry may also be submitted in their respective categories. Self-published projects must be published in a run of at least 500 copies. Children’s book entries should be entered in the Book category only, not Sequential.

EDITORIAL
Examples: work commissioned by newspapers or magazines, medical and scientific journals or online magazines.

BOOK
Examples: all illustrations originally commissioned for use inside or on the covers of hardbound and paperback books, including fiction and non-fiction; children’s and young adult literature and comic books. Promotional posters or advertisements depicting book art must be submitted in the book category.

ADVERTISING
Examples: illustrations for advertisements appearing in newspapers, magazines or on television; video and CD covers; brochures, fashion, point-of-purchase and packaging illustration; movie and theater posters.

INSTITUTIONAL
Examples: work appearing on merchandise, announcements, annual reports, calendars, corporate projects, government service projects, greeting cards, newsletters, in-house publications, philatelic work and collectibles.

UNCOMMISSIONED
This includes all self-generated work such as portfolio samples, sourcebook ads and uncommissioned stock that are currently unpublished except as promotion for the artist or artist’s representative. Commissioned work appearing as self-promotion should be entered in the category for which the work was originally done. Note: There will be no art directors or clients credited for Uncommissioned works.

HOW TO ENTER
Submit PROOFS OR TEARSHEETS of published work. If a tearsheet is unavailable or if no hard copy format was ever created or if over-sized or three-dimensional, enter a high-quality print no larger than 8 1/2"x11".

DO NOT Submit Slides or Digital Files

DO NOT mat or mount prints, proofs or tearsheets. If there is more than one illustration on a page, clearly identify which illustration is to be judged.

DO NOT submit electronic files or original art. Entry material will not be returned.

COMPLETE ONE ENTRY FORM FOR EACH PIECE OF ART.

If your art is chosen to be in the show, a copy of your entry form will be returned to you. You must be able to determine which entry was accepted from the information you supply. Title all work and enter page numbers if applicable. When entering a piece that includes multiple images, indicate on the form which one illustration is to be considered for judging (except for entries to the Sequential category).

CREDITS AND ADDRESSES MUST BE COMPLETE, ACCURATE AND LEGIBLE. Credit information for the annual book, award medals and certificates will be taken from the entry form.

Entry forms and FAQs can also be downloaded from: www.societyillustrators.org

FOR PRINTED ENTRIES, the entry form must be taped securely to the back of the tearsheet or print.

For sequential entries, for print entries, submit the entire project as one entry, with one entry form taped securely to the back. The preferred formats for animation entries are VHS, DVD and CD and should not exceed two minutes in length (edit as needed). Attach the entry form to cassette box or jewel case.
